The Problem
A brush — bristle or silicone — lays glue down unevenly: thicker where the brush loads more, thinner where it doesn't, with high and low points across the joint. On a glue-up where a thin, consistent film matters, those variations show.
The Technique
- Get a bolt or a length of threaded rod, sized to roughly the width of the area you're spreading glue over.
- Run a bead of glue or adhesive polymer along the surface.
- Drag the threaded rod or bolt through the bead, pulling it across the surface.
- The threads meter the adhesive as they pass, leaving behind a uniform, thin layer with no high or low points.
The mechanism is the threads themselves: each ridge picks up and redistributes a consistent amount of adhesive, the way a notched trowel meters thinset, instead of a brush's bristles depositing glue unevenly depending on how loaded they are.
