Clamp Stair Trim Down With a Scrap Block Screwed to the Tread Above

The Problem

Gluing trim onto a stair — a riser, a return, a skirt piece — needs steady pressure while the adhesive sets. On almost any other assembly you'd reach for a clamp, but a staircase gives a clamp nothing to bite on. There's no free edge within reach: the tread runs into the wall on one side and into open air on the other, and the piece you're pressing sits in the corner where the tread meets the riser, which is precisely where no clamp head fits.

The usual fallbacks are worse than they look. Holding it by hand means standing on a stair for as long as the glue takes. Pin nails hold it, but they hold it wherever it happened to be when you fired them, and they leave holes in a finished face.

The Technique

Build the clamp out of the staircase itself.

  1. Glue and position the trim piece, and get it sitting exactly where you want it.
  2. Set a small block on top of the riser, sitting on the edge you want pressure on. This is the pad that actually bears on the work, and it's what puts the pressure in one known place instead of wherever a long scrap happens to touch.
  3. Lay a scrap of solid wood a few inches long across from the tread above, so its far end lands on that small block. Because the block lifts that end, the scrap sits at a slight angle rather than flat.
  4. Drive a screw down through the scrap into the tread, back from the end that's resting on the block.
  5. As the screw pulls its end of the scrap down onto the tread, the scrap pivots over the small block and drives it down onto the riser. Drive it until you see the joint close.
  6. Leave it while the glue sets, then back the screw out and lift both pieces off.

The screw is doing what a clamp screw does, the scrap is the clamp arm, and the tread above is the fixed jaw. The small block is what makes the arm work — without it the scrap would lie flat on the tread with nothing to pivot against, and the screw would just pull it tight to the tread instead of levering anything down.

Pro tip: Put the screw through the part of the tread that won't be seen, or through tread that's getting covered anyway. On a staircase being refinished with new treads, or one where the tread is protected and the screw hole ends up under the next layer, this costs nothing. On a finished tread you're trading a clamp for a filled hole, so decide before you drive it — the tread is the surface people look at every day.
Pro tip: A strip of stair armour or heavy card between the small block and the trim keeps the block from printing its grain into a soft or finished face. Worth putting a strip under the scrap where it meets the tread too, since that end slides slightly as the screw pulls it down.
Safety note: A block screwed to a tread is a trip hazard on a staircase people are still using, at the exact height a foot lands. If the glue is setting overnight, block the stair off or tape something visible to the scrap — the whole point is that you walk away and leave it.
