Stair Stringer Backing
A 2×4 spacer behind each stringer at framing time so drywall and skirt board slide in later instead of being scribed around stairs.
A half-wall that only ties to the floor wobbles at the top of a stair. Cut a hole in the floor beside it — after checking you're not over a joist — run a 2x4 down flush against the rim board, fasten it to the rim first, plumb the wall against the brace, then fasten wall to brace. A second brace makes it immovable.

A half-wall at the top of a stair — the kind a handrail mounts to — is often fastened only through its bottom plate, tied to a full wall at one end and free at the other. The free end flexes under a hand, which is exactly where people grab it.
