Patch Drywall With Repair Clips When There's Nothing to Screw To

When a hole lands between studs, repair clips slide over the cut edges of the existing drywall and give the patch something solid to screw into — no fishing backing boards through the hole.

The Problem

A drywall hole that lands between studs leaves you holding a patch with nowhere to fasten it — push it into the opening and it falls straight through into the wall cavity. The traditional fix is fishing scrap backing boards through the hole and screwing through the face to hold them, which works but is awkward in a small opening.

The Technique

Drywall repair clips are made for exactly this.

  1. Square up the hole and cut a patch to match.
  2. Slide clips over the cut edges of the existing drywall — one per side on a small patch, more on a bigger one. Each clip straddles the edge and puts a fastening surface behind the opening.
  3. Screw through the existing drywall into each clip to anchor it.
  4. Set the patch in the opening and screw it to the clips too — it's now held flush and solid on all sides.
  5. On the style of clip with temporary tabs, snap the tabs off once everything's fastened. Then tape, mud, and paint like any patch.
Pro tip: Clips earn their keep on mid-size holes — big enough that a self-adhesive mesh patch would flex, small enough that opening the hole out to the nearest studs would triple the repair. For those, a handful of clips is faster than backing boards and gives support on every edge, not just two.
