Mix a Small Dab of Quick-Set Mud Right on the Knife
Dip a small knife alternately in water and dry quick-set powder, scrape the layers onto a bigger knife, and mix there — a perfect little blob for filling nail holes, with no pan of mud racing the clock.

The Problem
Quick-set joint compound is the right material for filling dings before paint — it cures in minutes instead of drying overnight. It's also intimidating in exactly one way: mix a pan of it, fuss over the consistency a beat too long, and the whole batch sets up before it touches the wall. For a handful of nail holes, a pan is a waste and a race.
The Technique
Skip the pan and mix on your knives:
- Set out a bucket of clean water and your bag or bucket of dry quick-set (20-minute works well), plus two knives — one small, one wide. A trowel makes a good wide one.
- Dip the small knife in the water, then into the dry powder, then water, then powder — alternating, each dip stacking a layer — until the knife carries about the amount of mud the job needs.
- Finish with one more dip in the water.
- Scrape the loaded knife off onto the wide knife, and mix it right there on the blade until the dry clumps are gone.
- You're holding a small, perfectly workable blob — fill your nicks and dings straight off the knife.
Nothing to wash but two knives, nothing wasted, and the clock never gets a vote.
