Remove Stubborn Sticky Labels With Cooking Oil Instead of Soap

The Problem

Some sticky labels peel off in one satisfying sheet. The rest tear, leave a patch of gummy residue, and laugh at dish soap — because the adhesive is rubber-based, and soap chemistry isn't built to break it down.

The Technique

1. Put a little cooking oil on a paper towel or a scouring pad — a spray oil works well for dosing it.
2. Rub the residue. The oil dissolves the rubber-based adhesive as you work.
3. Wash the surface normally afterward to take off the oil film.

That's the whole trick: match the solvent to the glue. Oil for rubber-based adhesive, where soap and water were never going to work.
