Strip and Restore Stainless Steel With an Oxalic-Acid Cleanser and Three Cloths

The Problem

If your stainless steel looks dull and smeary no matter how often you clean it, the cleaner may be the culprit. Most products sold as stainless cleaners are actually cream polishes — each application leaves a thin oily layer, and over months those layers build into a greasy film that grabs fingerprints and haze. You're not cleaning the steel anymore; you're polishing the buildup.

The Technique

1. Strip it. Use an oxalic-acid powder cleanser (Bar Keepers Friend is the common one). It removes the embedded grime, hard-water marks, and even rust that the cream products have been sealing in.
2. Scrub with the grain. Work it over the surface with a non-scratch scrubbing sponge, always following the direction of the steel's grain. Use a medium-bristle brush for handles, seams, and other spots the sponge can't reach.
3. The three-cloth finish. First, a dry microfiber to pick up all the excess cleanser. Second, a wet microfiber to rinse the surface. Third, a fresh dry microfiber to detail it to a streak-free finish.

The difference between this and another pass of cream polish is the difference between washing a window and waxing it.
