Turn the Brad Nailer 90 Degrees So Blowouts Can't Exit the Face

The Problem

The brad that curls out the side of the casing — through the face you just filled and sanded — feels random. It isn't. The nail's deflection plane is fixed by how the fastener sits in the gun: a wandering brad exits left or right relative to the nailer's body, essentially never fore-and-aft.

The Technique

  1. Look at your stock and ask: which direction can this piece not afford a blowout? On edge-nailed trim, that's the faces.
  2. Rotate the nailer so its left-right deflection plane runs into the material's depth — for most narrow stock, that means turning the gun 90 degrees from how you'd naturally hold it.
  3. Fire as normal. A nail that hits grain and deflects now travels within the board's thickness, where nobody will ever see it, instead of erupting from the show face.

That's the entire rule, and the creator's shop treats it as a hiring filter: know it, or the position is unlikely.
