Scribe a Deck Board to a Wall by Cutting the Scribing Block Wider Than the Board

The Problem

The last deck board against a wall almost never runs parallel to it. Walls bow, render is uneven, and the board has to follow that line while still leaving a gap — decking needs an expansion gap at the perimeter, and a board pushed tight to a wall will lift or split as it moves.

Scribing the board to the wall solves the shape. The gap is the part people then get wrong, because they scribe tight and try to add a gap afterwards by eye.

The Technique

Build the gap into the scribing block, so the line you draw is already the line you cut.

  1. Lay the board to be scribed in position, lined up with the previous board and parallel to it, not to the wall.
  2. Work out the block width: the board's width plus the gap you want. His boards are 140mm and he cuts the block at 150mm, which gives 5mm at each end of the run.
  3. Run the block along the wall with a pencil held against its far edge, tracing the wall's shape onto the board across the whole length.
  4. Cut to the line.
  5. Drop it in and check the fit against the wall.
Pro tip: Cut slightly proud and leave the pencil line visible rather than splitting it. His advice after the first cut is to come back and fine-tune with a plane or a packer — a scribe you can still see is a scribe you can still adjust, and a line cut away is a board you cut again.
Pro tip: Register the board against the previous board, not against the wall. The whole method depends on the board sitting parallel to the deck while the block does the work of reading the wall — if the board is already following the wall, the block just copies an error you've already made.

Fit a Board to a Rough Stone Wall by Sizing the Scribe Spacer to the Deepest Hollow

A scribe can only copy a surface if the spacer is wider than the biggest gap. On rough stone that means swapping the washer for something the size of a grinder disc.

The Problem

Scribing copies an irregular surface onto a workpiece: you hold the workpiece near the wall, run a spacer along the wall with a pencil riding at the other side of it, and the pencil traces the wall's shape onto the board. Cut to that line and the board sits tight against the wall.

It only works if the spacer never loses contact. A washer that spans 10mm can follow a wall that wanders 5mm in and out. Put that same washer against rough stone that hollows back 30mm between proud faces and it drops into the hollows, hits the far side, and the line it draws is no longer a copy of anything — it's a copy of the parts of the wall the washer could reach.

The failure is quiet. The line looks like a scribe line. You cut to it carefully, offer the board up, and it rocks on two high spots with daylight behind it.

The Technique

The spacer sets the limit, so size the spacer to the wall.

  1. Look along the surface and find the deepest hollow between the points that stick out furthest. That distance is what the spacer has to clear.
  2. Pick a spacer at least that wide. On rough stone, a cut-off angle grinder disc is about right — it's rigid, perfectly round, and around 115mm or 125mm across, so it bridges hollows a washer falls into.
  3. Set the workpiece parallel to the wall, held off it by at least the spacer's width, and fix or brace it so it can't shift while you trace.
  4. Run the spacer along the wall face with the pencil held against its outer edge. Keep the spacer's travel square to the workpiece the whole way — if it tilts, the offset changes and the line drifts.
  5. Cut to the line. The board now sits back from the wall by exactly one spacer width along its whole length, so trim the whole board by that amount, or set it out that far from the start.
Pro tip: Whatever you use, the offset is only honest if the spacer stays the same width in every orientation, which is why round things — washers, discs, a socket — work and an offcut of timber doesn't. A rectangular block gives you one offset when it's flat and a different one when it rolls onto a corner, and it will roll.
Pro tip: A compass or a set of scribes does the same job with an adjustable offset, and it's the right tool when the gap is small. The reason to reach for a disc is reach — most compasses top out well under 100mm, so once the wall hollows further than that, the fixed spacer is what you've got.
Safety note: Use a disc that's already worn out and taken off the grinder, and check it for cracks before you handle it. A disc with a chip in the rim will shed grit into your hand as you drag it along stone.

Pre-Tack the Whole Room and Scribe Every Baseboard at Once

A finish crew's version of scribing base to the floor: tack every piece in the room at a uniform height, run a step scribe along the floor on all of it, then pull it, rip the scribe lines on the table saw, and reinstall glued and nailed — tight to the floor with crisp outside miters.

The Problem

Scribing baseboard to the floor one piece at a time works, but every piece is its own measure-scribe-cut-refit cycle — and outside corners add a second problem, because the two mitered pieces have to land at exactly the same height or the miter steps. On a whole house of base, piece-at-a-time scribing is where the schedule goes.

The Technique

  1. Cut and fit all the base for the room first, mitering the outside corners with the pieces cut to follow the wall angles.
  2. Tack everything up at once — a brad in each piece, whole room, all at a uniform height. Pre-tacking is what guarantees both halves of every outside miter sit at exactly the same height.
  3. Run a step scribe along the floor across every piece in the room. His scribe tool carries eight offsets in 1/16" steps, so the scribe rides the floor's waves and marks each board with its own contour line.
  4. Pull the base off, pull the brads, and rip to the scribe lines on the table saw.
  5. Bring it all back: glue the miter joints, then nail everything off — finding studs with a stud finder rather than nailing blind near pipe territory.

The result is base tight to the floor along its whole run and outside miters that close like furniture — no shoe molding covering gaps.

Pro tip: The batch approach wins on any room with more than a couple of corners: one tack-up, one scribing pass, one trip to the saw. The piece-at-a-time method (the other take on this technique) still makes sense for a single wall or a repair.

Scribe Stone Slabs to Boulders With a Block of Wood

The Problem

Setting cut stone against natural rock is the hardest fit in hardscaping. The boulder's edge is a freeform curve no tape measure can capture, and a slab that almost fits reads as a sloppy gap — mortar can only hide so much between a machined edge and a natural one.

The Technique

Scribing works on stone exactly the way it works on baseboard against a wavy floor — a spacer of constant width rides the irregular surface and redraws it onto the workpiece.

  1. Set the slab in position, as close to the rock as it can sit.
  2. Take a chunk of wood sized to span the widest part of the gap, hold a marker against its far side, and ride the block along the rock face so the marker drags a line across the slab. The block keeps the marker a constant distance off the rock, so the line is the rock's profile, shifted onto your slab.
  3. Cut the scribed curve with a wet saw.
  4. Slide the slab in — the cut edge nests against the boulder.
Pro tip: The scribe block's width is the amount the slab will move toward the rock when you cut — so keep the slab parallel to its final position while you scribe, and don't let the block rock or tilt mid-pass. One steady drag beats three careful ones that each wandered a little differently.
Safety note: Stone cutting means crystalline silica. A wet saw controls most of the dust, but still wear a respirator, eye protection, and hearing protection — and mind your footing when muscling slabs around rock; pinched fingers and rolled ankles are the everyday injuries of this work.

Scribe Baseboard to a Wavy Floor Instead of Hiding the Gap

The Problem

Set a straight baseboard on a real-world floor and daylight shows underneath — floors dip and hump, and the gaps telegraph every low spot. The usual cover-up is shoe molding, which works but adds a second trim line you may not want. The craftsman's answer is to make the baseboard's bottom edge match the floor.

The Technique

  1. Stand the baseboard in place against the wall, resting on the high spots.
  2. Find a small block slightly taller than the widest gap under the board.
  3. Set a pencil on top of the block and slide the pair along the floor for the board's full length. The block follows every dip and rise, and the pencil draws the floor's exact profile onto the baseboard's face.
  4. Cut to the line with a jigsaw set to roughly a 20-degree back bevel, leaving the pencil line intact. The back bevel means only the board's front edge will touch the floor, so the fit reads tight without needing the whole thickness to match.
  5. Bring the edge the rest of the way to the line with a belt sander. Slow the sander down if you're new to it — the goal is kissing the line, not blowing past it.
  6. Test the fit, touch up any spots that hold the board off the floor, and install.
Pro tip: Scribing sets the board's height at the low spots, so plan your reveal: a taller baseboard profile gives you material to lose. The same block-and-pencil scribe fits cabinets, countertop backsplashes, and shelving to wavy walls — it's the same move rotated ninety degrees.
