Aim the Brad Nail's Chisel Point Along the Panel, Not Across It

The Problem

Everyone who's run a brad nailer along a cabinet side or a trim edge has had a nail blow out the face of the panel — the fastener curls and erupts through the finished surface it was supposed to hide inside. The usual self-diagnosis is "I must have tilted the gun." Often the gun was fine. Brad nails have a chisel-ground tip, and when that tip glances off something hard inside the wood — dense grain, a knot, another fastener — it deflects in a predictable direction: the way the chisel faces.

The Technique

  1. Look at the strip of brads in your nailer and find which way the chisel points are ground. The nail will tend to skip in line with the chisel's wedge.
  2. When nailing near a panel face — attaching a cabinet back, running brads along an edge — rotate the nailer so the chisel is oriented along the panel, parallel to the face.
  3. Now if a nail hits something hard and deflects, it skips deeper into the panel or out the back — directions that don't matter — instead of out through the show face.

That's the whole tip: the nailer's rotation is a decision, not a whatever-is-comfortable grip.

Pro tip: Check the chisel orientation every time you load a new strip — manufacturers don't all collate the same way, and one assumption carried across brands is how a career's worth of "mystery" blowouts happens.
