What the Neutral Wire Actually Does: The Transformer's Center Tap
The transformer on the pole sends two hot legs into your house — 240 volts between them. The neutral is tapped from the center of that transformer coil, giving each hot leg a 120-volt return path so ordinary circuits can exist.
