What the Neutral Wire Actually Does: The Transformer's Center Tap

The Problem

Everyone wiring a receptacle has been told the white wire is "the neutral," and almost nobody can say what that means. It's not a spare, and it's not the same as ground — and the easiest way to understand it is to follow it out of the house to where it comes from.

The Technique

Look at the utility pole (or the pad transformer) feeding your house:

  1. The gray cylinder is a transformer, and three wires leave it for your house: two hots and one neutral.
  2. The two hot legs are opposite ends of one transformer coil. At any instant they're at opposite polarity, so measured between them you get 240 volts — that's what feeds the dryer, the range, the AC.
  3. The neutral is tapped from the center of that same coil. From either hot leg to the center tap is half the coil — 120 volts. The neutral is the return path that completes a circuit using just one leg.
  4. So the neutral is what makes 120-volt circuits possible. Without it, the house would only have 240 between the two hots; with it, every ordinary receptacle and light circuit runs from one hot leg back to the transformer's center point.

That's the whole job: the neutral carries current back from 120-volt loads to the middle of the transformer winding. It's a working, current-carrying conductor — which is exactly why it gets treated with the same respect as the hots.

Pro tip: You'll hear this called "phase A and phase B," but residential service is split single-phase: one phase, center-tapped, split into two legs. The distinction matters mostly so the terminology doesn't confuse you when you meet true three-phase power in commercial settings.
