A wide elastic hooked under the can's handle tabs and stretched across the mouth gives you a wipe edge over the middle of the can — the rim stays clean, the lid seals later, and the band doubles as a brush rest.
Three switches never line up by eye. Back the screws off until each one is snug rather than tight, fit the cover plate to push them into position, then take it off — snug is loose enough to move and tight enough to stay put.
The weight gets the blame, but a hose snagged on a shut-off valve or the trap gives the same symptom. Clear the run first; only then loosen the weight and slide it down.
