The Problem
Lining up a miter-saw cut usually means sighting the blade — or the shadow line — against a pencil mark. That works on flat stock. On a molding profile, the shape blocks your view of where the blade actually meets the mark, and "close enough" repeated across a run of identical cuts drifts into pieces that don't fit.
The Technique
The setup takes one test cut, then every cut after is a two-mark alignment:
- Stick a piece of masking tape on the saw fence.
- Take a piece of stock and make a cut. Leave the cut piece in place against the fence.
- Make an arbitrary mark on the tape, a convenient distance from the blade, and transfer it onto the stock.
- Slide the stock back until the corner of your fresh cut sits on the tape mark, then trace the stock's transferred mark back onto the tape. You now have two marks on the fence tape exactly one offset apart — the front mark is where the cut lands, the back mark is your alignment reference.
To cut to a measurement:
- Mark your measurement on the stock as usual.
- Set the measurement mark on the front (cut) mark, trace the back fence mark onto the stock, then slide the stock forward until that second mark reaches the back fence mark.
- Run the saw. The blade lands on your measurement mark every time — you never had to see the blade meet the line.
Pro tip: This isn't for every cut — on flat stock, sighting the blade is faster. It is worth the extra marking on repeated cuts on profiles (crown, base, anything sculpted) where the shape hides the blade-to-mark alignment. The whole trick is an offset: you're aligning at a spot you can see instead of the spot you can't.
