The Problem
The joints are the maintenance burden of every flagstone patio and paver walk: polymeric sand washes out, weeds root in whatever replaces it, ants mine it from below, and a pressure washer — the tool you'd like to clean with — blasts the joints empty. Most people accept re-sanding as a recurring chore because they don't know the alternative category exists.
The Main Idea
Permeable resin jointing compounds — several manufacturers make them — are a different material class from sand:
- The product is a resin-bound aggregate, mixed in a wheelbarrow like mortar.
- It gets poured over the surface and spread into the joints with a screed or squeegee, working it down until the joints are filled.
- It cures into a firm joint that is water-permeable — rain drains through the joint into the base instead of ponding — while being solid enough that weeds can't root, ants can't excavate, and a pressure washer can't blast it out.
- It's a one-time install, compatible with any joint width and stone or paver type.
Pro tip: Permeability is the detail that makes this legal and functional where solid mortar joints aren't — a mortared patio sheds water to its edges; a resin-jointed one keeps draining like a sand-set surface. If your patio was built as a permeable assembly, this preserves that.
