Snap Narrow Tile Cuts Over a Pencil When the Breaker Keeps Chipping

The Problem

On a manual snap cutter, narrow cuts misbehave: the score is fine, but when the breaker foot presses down, the snap runs true through the middle and then breaks out ragged at one end — sometimes the cutter, sometimes the tile, always the last inch. On cuts where most of the tile is waste, there isn't enough material on one side for the breaker to press evenly.

The Technique

This tiler's old trick skips the cutter's breaker entirely:

1. Score the tile on the snap cutter as you normally would — one or two firm passes; you can hear a proper score.
2. Take the tile off the cutter and lay it on a flat surface with a pencil underneath, directly under the score line, running its full length.
3. Press down on both sides of the tile at once.
4. The tile snaps along the score, end to end — the pencil concentrates the bending stress evenly under the whole line instead of wherever the breaker foot happened to bear.

His own honest scoping: he uses this for against-the-wall cuts that will be covered by trim or silicone — it's a rescue for the cuts that keep breaking wrong, not a polished-edge method for exposed work.
