Directional Thinset Troweling
Combing mortar in straight parallel lines so the air escapes when the tile goes down.
Swirled mortar and spot-bonding trap air and leave voids. Key thinset into both surfaces with the flat side first, comb straight parallel ridges along the tile's short dimension, then set the tile and slide it back and forth across the ridges to collapse them into full coverage.
hollow sounding tile, tiles popping loose, spread tile adhesive properly, loose tile after install
Two habits sink more tile jobs than any others. Swirl patterns — sweeping the trowel in arcs — look fine but give trapped air no path out, so thinset coverage under the tile comes up short. And spot bonding — dabs of mortar at the corners and center — leaves voids that turn into unbonded, cracking tiles down the road.
Follow those three and the coverage under every tile is the kind installers check for with a proud pull-up test.
