Mark Outlet Cutouts by Sticking the Outlet to the Back of Your Panel
Unscrew the outlet, put double-stick tape on its face, and press the new panel into place — the outlet comes away stuck exactly where the cutout goes, so you can line up your cutout shape on it and cut a perfect opening with zero measuring.

The Problem
Covering a wall with 1/4-inch plywood or paneling means every outlet needs a cutout in exactly the right spot. Measuring from two edges, transferring the numbers to the back of the sheet, and remembering to mirror everything is where it goes wrong — one flipped dimension and the hole lands an inch off, in a panel you already cut.
The Technique
Let the outlet mark its own location.
- Kill the breaker, then back out the screws holding the outlet to its box — leave it wired and sitting in place.
- Stick double-sided tape to the face of the outlet.
- Lift the panel into its final position and press it firmly against the wall where the outlet sits.
- Pull the panel away — the outlet comes with it, stuck to the back at the exact cutout location.
- Don't trace around the outlet itself — a hole that size would be too big, with nothing for the cover plate to hide. Instead, use the receptacle openings (the plug slots) as your registration marks: line up whatever rectangular shape you're using as a cutout template on them, and trace that.
- Un-stick the outlet, cut the traced rectangle, and reinstall the outlet through the new opening once the panel is up.
Pro tip: The generalizable move here is imprinting instead of measuring: whenever something already in the room has to poke through the piece you're fitting, look for a way to make it stamp its own position — tape, chalk, or lipstick on the edges all do the same job.
Safety note: Shut off the breaker before you unscrew the outlet, and confirm it's dead with a voltage tester — you're pressing a panel against a device that's still wired. Screw the outlet back to its box before the circuit goes live again.
