The Problem

Miter saws leave the factory calibrated. Then they get loaded into trucks, jostled across job sites, and occasionally dropped — and nothing about the saw tells you it's no longer cutting square. You find out from a miter joint that won't close.

There's a second, sneakier version of the same problem: even after you've squared the blade, the printed miter scale may no longer agree with it, so the saw cuts a true 90 while the pointer sits somewhere other than zero.

The Technique

  1. Extend the blade fully — pull the saw head all the way out on its slides — before checking anything. A blade that reads square at one point in its travel can drift across the rest of it.
  2. Set a 12-inch speed square against the fence and the blade. The longer edge is doing real work here: a short square can sit flush against a blade that's meaningfully out over a full cut. Look for daylight between the square and the blade body.
  3. Adjust the blade to the fence with the saw's own adjustment until the square shows no gap, and lock it down.
  4. Re-zero the scale. Loosen the screws holding the miter scale, shift it slightly so the zero mark and the red indicator arrow line up with the saw in its now-true position, and retighten.
  5. Repeat the square check to confirm nothing moved while you were tightening.
Pro tip: Step 4 is the one that gets skipped, and it's what makes the calibration usable day to day. A saw that cuts square only when the pointer says 0.4° is a saw you'll get wrong the first time you're working fast.

A miter saw that cuts 90.4 degrees when the scale says 90 poisons everything downstream — every butt joint gaps on one side, every four-piece frame accumulates the error into a corner that won't close, and you end up blaming your technique for what's actually the tool. Saws drift out of square from transport, from drops, and sometimes straight out of the box, and most people never check.

The Technique

The fix is fussy but simple in shape: free the saw's alignment, square it to something you trust, and lock it back down.

  1. Unplug the saw (or pull the battery).
  2. Set an accurate framing square against the fence and the blade body — flat against the plate, not touching any teeth, since the set of the teeth will throw off the reading.
  3. Find and loosen the fasteners that hold the saw's rotation true to its detent stops — the screws or bolts that fix the fence (or the detent plate, depending on the saw) in relation to the blade.
  4. With everything just loose enough to move, carefully bring the saw to a perfect 90 degrees against the square.
  5. Retighten the fasteners in that position, then re-check with the square — tightening can shift things, so confirm rather than assume.

Check it once in a while, not just once: a saw that gets loaded in and out of a vehicle earns a recheck every few months.

Pro tip: The truth test for any miter saw is the flip test: crosscut a wide board, flip one half over, and butt the two cut ends together against a straightedge. Any error in the saw shows up doubled in the seam — a gap you can see and measure, with no scale or square to argue with.
Safety note: Do all of this unplugged. You'll have hands on the blade and fence repeatedly, and a miter saw's trigger is exactly where you grab to move the head.
