Miter Test Blocks
Measuring between mitered long points with a pair of known-length test blocks — a clean tape pull plus constants instead of knife-edge reads.
Tom Silva's layout trick: slide all your panels tight to one end of the wall, measure the single leftover space, divide by the number of gaps you want, and cut a spacer block to that number — then walk the panels down the wall off the block.

Decorative wall paneling lives or dies on even spacing — and calculating it the head-on way means juggling wall length, panel widths, and gap counts in one equation, then trusting your marks across the whole run. One slip in the arithmetic and the last panel lands against the door casing with a gap that's obviously wrong.
Tom Silva's version replaces the algebra with one measurement:
Every gap comes off the same physical block, so the spacing can't drift, and the arithmetic was one division.
