Repeat Cuts Without Re-Measuring

Keep a Circular-Saw Cut On Size by Cutting on the Correct Side of the Line
A circular-saw blade removes about 1/8 inch of material as kerf, so cutting on the wrong side of a layout line shorts the piece by that much. Match which side of the line the blade rides to the direction you're pushing the saw, so the line stays visible past the blade guard for the whole cut.

The Problem
A pencil line has width, and a saw blade removes even more material than the line as it cuts. A beginner who eyeballs which side of the line to run the blade gets it wrong about as often as right — and when the blade is on the wrong side, the finished piece comes out short by the width of the kerf, roughly 1/8 inch on most circular saws.
The Technique
- Mark your cut line, then decide which direction you'll push the saw across the board before you start cutting.
- If you're pushing the saw right to left, keep the blade on the left side of the line. If you're pushing left to right, keep it on the right side.
- Cut so the blade stays on the side of the line that's still visible past the motor housing and blade guard as you go — losing sight of the line partway through a cut is when it starts to wander.
Pick a direction, keep the blade on the matching side, and the piece comes out the size you marked instead of a kerf short.
Pro tip: This is a memory aid, not a law — some cuts call for splitting the line instead (leaving it just visible on both sides of the blade) or deliberately leaving extra material to trim to a scribed fit. Use the direction rule as your default for straight, to-size cuts, and depart from it on purpose when a cut calls for it.
