Extract a Broken PVC Pipe Stub With a Heated Chuck Key
Heat the geared end of a drill chuck key, press it into the snapped-off PVC stub, let it cool so the plastic hardens around the teeth, then twist the stub right out of the fitting.

The Problem
A threaded PVC pipe snaps off flush inside its fitting, and suddenly there's nothing to grip. The stub is recessed, the fitting is glued or buried in the wall, and the usual outcome is chewing at it with a screwdriver or cutting out the whole fitting and rebuilding the joint — a much bigger repair than the break itself.
The Technique
A drill chuck key becomes a one-use extractor:
- Hold the chuck key with pliers and heat its geared tip with a lighter or small torch — hot enough to soften plastic on contact, not glowing.
- Press the heated tip into the broken stub. The gear teeth melt into the plastic and seat themselves.
- Let it cool completely — give it a minute, or speed it up with a splash of water. The PVC hardens around the teeth, locking the key to the stub.
- Turn the key counterclockwise. The stub threads out of the fitting with the key as its new handle.
The fitting stays intact and takes a new pipe as if nothing happened.
Pro tip: The chuck key works because its geared end is tapered and deeply toothed — a lot of grip in a small plug. Anything with the same shape does the job, but the key's T-handle is what gives you the twisting leverage at the end.
Safety note: Melting PVC releases fumes you don't want to breathe — work ventilated and heat the metal, never the pipe directly. The key stays burn-hot well after it stops glowing; handle it with pliers until it has fully cooled.
