Keep a 10-Inch Offcut of Base Stock as a Measuring Block, Square, and Notepad
A short strip of the baseboard you're installing does three jobs: butt it into corners so you're not bending the tape, add its even 10 inches to the reading, and hold it against cuts to check they'll sit square — plus it's a notepad that's always in your hand.

The Problem
Measuring into a corner with a tape means bending the tape into the joint and guessing where the hook actually sits — the classic source of baseboard pieces an eighth short or an eighth proud. And on a trim day, the pencil, the notepad, and the square are never in the same place as your hands.
The Technique
Cut a strip of the base stock you're installing to exactly 10 inches and keep it with you:
- Corner measuring block. Instead of bending the tape into the corner, stand the block in the corner and measure to its edge. Add the block's 10 inches — a round number picked so the math never trips you — and you have a true inside measurement with no tape-bend guesswork.
- Square-check reference. Hold the block against a cut end before installing the piece — because it's the same stock, it shows immediately whether the cut will sit square against the adjoining piece.
- Notepad. Measurements get written right on the block's face. It's always in your hand when you're at the saw, and it doesn't wander off the way paper does.
Pro tip: The block being *the same profile you're installing* is what makes the square check honest — a speed square tells you the cut is 90 degrees; the block tells you the profile will actually close up against its neighbor.
