Keep a Fruit Tree Small
Cutting a young fruit tree off at knee height to force low scaffold branches, holding a full-size variety at a height you can reach from the ground.
Skip the sod stripping and the cardboard. A 12-inch layer of arborist wood chips dumped straight on the lawn buries it for good, and the decomposers that break the chips down till the soil for you.

Converting lawn to planting beds the usual way means stripping sod, tilling, or smothering with cardboard — and a few inches of bagged mulch on top of any of it. Cardboard and fine, uniform chips both cut off oxygen to the soil underneath, and a thin layer doesn't reliably kill the grass anyway.
