Sheathing Strength Axis
Why a structural sheet's long dimension has to run across the rafters or joists it spans, and what happens to the deck when it doesn't.
Technique: Rodent-Proof Floor Insulation
An insulated floor over an open crawl or piers is a rodent invitation: warm, dry, soft batting a few chews above the ground. Mice and rats tunnel up through the underside, nest in the insulation, and by spring the floor cavity is a shredded, soiled mess you can only fix by tearing the floor apart — the single most common failure in shed, cabin, and tiny-home floors.
Armor the cavity from below, during the build, while the underside is still reachable.
The insulation now sits in a steel-screened box. Rodents can reach the mesh, but the mesh is where the journey ends.
