Technique: Rodent-Proof Floor Insulation
The Problem
An insulated floor over an open crawl or piers is a rodent invitation: warm, dry, soft batting a few chews above the ground. Mice and rats tunnel up through the underside, nest in the insulation, and by spring the floor cavity is a shredded, soiled mess you can only fix by tearing the floor apart — the single most common failure in shed, cabin, and tiny-home floors.
The Technique
Armor the cavity from below, during the build, while the underside is still reachable.
- Frame the floor structure — beams and joists as the plans call for.
- Close the underside: run lightweight stringers across the bottom of the frame to carry the barrier layer.
- Cover the underside with hardware cloth — the welded steel mesh rodents can't chew through — fastened over the stringers so every cavity is caged from below.
- Then build the floor up normally from above: vapor barrier, insulation in the cavities, and subfloor.
The insulation now sits in a steel-screened box. Rodents can reach the mesh, but the mesh is where the journey ends.
Pro tip: Hardware cloth, not window screen or chicken wire — 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch welded mesh is the stuff rodents actually can't defeat. Lap the seams and staple generously; a gap the width of your thumb is a mouse door, and the whole point of doing this at framing stage is that you never get a second chance at the underside.
