Make a Zero-Clearance Sole for Your Miter Saw From Offcuts

The Problem

A miter saw's stock bed has a wide throat opening, so there's nothing at the cut line to reference against — you sight down the blade, or nibble a test cut, to land exactly on a pencil mark. On trim and panel work, where every cut is to a mark, that guesswork costs time and the occasional short piece. The wide throat also leaves the workpiece unsupported at the cut, which is where tearout comes from.

The Technique

This carpenter builds a sacrificial sole — a false bed — for his miter saw out of leftover material:

  1. Cut scrap sheet stock to sit flat on the saw's bed, tight against the fence, and fasten it so it can't shift.
  2. Make one cut through it. The blade leaves a kerf in the sole.
  3. That kerf is now a permanent, exact indicator of where the blade lands. Put your pencil mark against the kerf and cut — the saw hits the mark every time.

Because the sole closes the throat gap to the width of the blade, it also backs up the workpiece fibers right at the cut, so trim and veneered panels come off the saw clean instead of frayed on the bottom edge.

Pro tip: A fixed sole assumes a fixed blade geometry. Miter swings left and right will each cut their own kerf and still reference true, but tilting the head for bevel cuts would chew the sole up and invalidate the kerf lines — this creator keeps his saw at zero bevel and treats the sole as a trim-and-panel setup, not a do-everything one.
