Stop Miter-Saw Tearout With a Painter's Tape Zero-Clearance Insert
The Problem
A miter saw tears out where the blade exits the wood — at the back of the cut against the fence, and on the bottom against the table. The saw's own fence and table can't prevent it, because the kerf slots in both are far wider than the blade, leaving the last fibers unsupported as the teeth punch through. On plywood veneers, prefinished stock, and trim that will show, that fuzzy exit edge is the difference between a finished-looking cut and one that needs cleanup.
The Technique
- Stick a few overlapping strips of painter's tape across the fence where the blade passes, and across the table over the kerf slot.
- Make your first cut through the tape. The blade slices its exact kerf width through it — you've made a zero-clearance insert on the fence and the table at once.
- Cut your workpieces. The tape now backs the fibers right up to the cut line on both exit faces, so the back and bottom edges come out clean.
- When you're done, peel the tape off. No cleanup, no residue.
Replace the tape once the slot gets chewed wide, or any time you change the miter or bevel angle — the kerf has to match the cut you're making.
Pro tip: This is the same principle as a zero-clearance insert plate on a table saw, in disposable form — and it works on tools that don't take replaceable inserts at all. The same tape trick backs up cuts on a jigsaw shoe or a circular-saw baseplate.
