Technique: Fascia Under the Picture Frame
On a deck with a picture-frame border, there are two ways to meet the fascia to the frame — and the one that looks fine on day one fails. Butt the fascia flush against the picture-frame board and the joint leaves an exposed seam facing the sky. Dirt and debris settle into it, hold moisture, break down, and slowly lever the fascia away from the framing. The failure shows up as fascia boards cupping and popping off — a repair call the builder says he keeps quoting.
With the fascia under the frame board, there's no upward-facing seam anywhere — nothing for debris to land in, nothing to hold water against the treated pine, nothing prying the board off over the years.
