Finish a Basement Ceiling With Slats Ripped From 2x4s
Rip framing lumber into thin strips and staple them across furring on the joists, using a paint stirrer as the spacing gauge. An open slat ceiling for the price of eight 2x4s — instead of a drop ceiling or black paint.

The Problem
Basement ceilings get one of two treatments: a drop ceiling that eats headroom and looks like an office, or everything sprayed flat black. A slat ceiling is a third option — an open, industrial look that keeps most of the headroom — and it can be built from ordinary framing lumber rather than pricey milled slats.
The Technique
- Fasten 1x2 furring strips up to the joists. These are the nailers the slats will cross.
- Rip 2x4s into strips about 3/16 inch thick on a table saw. The room in the video took about eight 2x4s' worth of strips. (No table saw? A circular saw with a rip guide or a bandsaw can get there — the strips don't need to be furniture-grade.)
- Cut the strips to length for your runs.
- Staple each slat to the furring with a crown stapler, using a paint stirrer as the spacing gauge between slats. Slide the stirrer along, butt the next slat to it, staple, repeat.
- Leave the wood raw, or paint or stain once it's up.
It's repetitive work — the creator calls it tedious, and he's right — but there's no drywall finishing, no grid system, and each slat is light enough to place one-handed.
Pro tip: Handle the joist bays before the slats go up: insulating them now is mostly about sound between floors, and an open-slat ceiling is much fiddlier to work above later. Same logic for any wiring or plumbing you've been meaning to get to — this ceiling hides less than drywall, but it still turns every bay into a reach-through job.
Safety note: Ripping 3/16-inch strips is thin-strip table saw work. Use a push stick or a thin-rip jig, keep your hands off the fence side of the blade, and never chase a strip through the cut with fingers. This is exactly the cut where kickback and finger injuries happen.
