Make a Six-Second Notched Jig for Window Apron and Header Layout

The Problem
Nailing on window aprons and headers by eye feels accurate right up until you check. One finish carpenter tells the story of trimming ten windows freehand as an apprentice, then checking them against a jig — nearly every one was off. The errors are small, but a trim line that's an eighth out of parallel with the window reads as crooked from across the room.
The Technique
The jig takes six seconds and any cutoff.
- Make two cuts in a scrap of trim stock so they form a notch, and knock the waste out with a hammer.
- The notch is sized to fit around the horn — the little ear where the window stool extends past the casing.
- Hook the jig over the horn and mark along it. The same reference position lets you mark the apron below and the header layout at the same time, both registered off the stool instead of off your eye.
- Set your trim so it barely covers the line, and nail it on.
Same jig, every window in the house — every apron lands identically, and the reveals repeat.
Pro tip: "Barely cover your line" is the finish carpenter's margin: marking where the edge goes and covering the pencil line keeps the line from ghosting past the trim while still using its full accuracy. And keep the jig in your pouch for the whole job — the value is in never re-deciding the layout.
