Tie a Layout String to a Stake So It Stays Tight
Loop the string around the stake once and pull it tight, loop it a second time, then take the tight standing part and pull it up and over the wraps. The string locks against itself and holds tension without a knot to untie later.

The Problem
A layout string that slips at the stake goes slack, and a slack line lies. Most quick ties either creep under tension or end the day as a jammed knot you cut off.
The Technique
- Loop the string around the stake once and pull it tight.
- Loop it around a second time.
- Take the tight standing part of the string — the side under tension — and pull it up and over the wraps.
The tensioned line now pins the wraps against the stake, so the harder the string pulls, the harder it locks. To release, lift the standing part back over and the wraps fall away — nothing to pick apart.

Pro tip: This locks best on a flat-sided stake, where the wraps can't rotate. On round stakes the whole wrap can slide and slowly give up tension — add a wrap or use a stake with corners when the line has to hold all day.
