Straighten a Bowed Stud With a Relief Cut and a Scab

The Problem

Studs aren't straight, and before drywall goes up is the last cheap chance to fix that. Run a long straightedge across the wall and most studs will touch it — but one bowed stud standing proud of the plane will telegraph through the finished wall as a visible bump, throw off baseboard and cabinet runs, and get worse the taller the wall is.

The Technique

  1. Find the offender: hold a long level or straightedge across several studs and look for the one holding a gap against its neighbors.
  2. At the peak of the bow, make an angled relief cut partway through the stud — a 45° bevel cut rather than a square kerf. The cut releases the tension holding the bow.
  3. Push the stud into plane. The cut closes up and the stud lies flat against the straightedge — what was a stiff bow now moves with hand pressure.
  4. Lock it straight, immediately. Either drive a structural screw at an angle through the cut, or — stronger — scab a length of 2x4 alongside the stud, spanning well past the cut, and nail or screw it off along its length.
Pro tip: This fix is debated among framers, and the alternatives are worth knowing: if the stud isn't carrying anything yet, swapping in a straight one is cleaner; and a stud bowed only slightly can be planed down on the proud side instead, with drywall shims on the opposite face. The relief cut earns its place when the stud is already wired, plumbed, or blocked in and replacement means undoing half a wall.
Safety note: A relief-cut stud has lost most of its strength until it's reinforced — never leave the cut without a scab or structural fastener. And don't use this on a load-bearing or shear wall without checking your local code: many jurisdictions prohibit cutting studs in structural walls, and the right fix there is jacking and replacement, not a kerf.
