The Problem

Prying in an engine bay is a geometry problem. There's usually a spot to pry against and a part that needs persuading — but a fixed pry bar has one bend, and if that bend doesn't match the clearance available, you end up pushing at a bad angle from a worse position.

The Technique

Pry-bar adapters are sold as sets of socket-drive attachments — a prying tip with a square drive hole in it:

  1. Snap the adapter onto your ratchet or breaker bar like any socket.
  2. Set the head angle so the tip reaches the pry point while the handle sits where you can actually pull.
  3. Pry. The drive engagement holds the tip's orientation, and the bar's length is whatever your ratchet or breaker bar gives you.

One adapter effectively becomes a whole rack of differently-bent pry bars, because the angle comes from the tool head instead of the forging.

Pro tip: Use a breaker bar rather than a fine-tooth ratchet when the pry needs real force — a breaker bar's pivot head is solid, while a hard shock load on a ratchet head spends its life savings on the pawl mechanism.
