The Problem
You need to pour a liquid — engine oil, windshield washer fluid, coolant, or even water — into a small opening, and you don't have a funnel. Pouring freehand usually means spilling half of it down the side.
The Technique
- Find a thin rod that fits into the opening — a dipstick, long screwdriver, dowel, or even a chopstick
- Insert the rod into the opening so it sticks up and out
- Hold the container of liquid above the opening
- Pour slowly, letting the liquid stream hit the rod
- Surface tension grabs the liquid and channels it down the rod, straight into the hole
The liquid follows the rod because of surface tension — it's the same principle that makes water run down the side of a glass when you pour too slowly. Here you're using that tendency on purpose.
Pro tip: This works best with a smooth rod and a slow, steady pour. If you pour too fast, the stream overwhelms the surface tension and you're back to splashing. Think gentle stream, not a dump.
Pro tip: For engine oil specifically: wipe the dipstick clean before using it as a guide. You don't want to contaminate the new oil with whatever was on the stick from your last check.
Pro tip: If you don't have a rod handy, a water bottle with the bottom cut off makes a great improvised funnel. But the rod trick is faster when you're in a pinch and don't have scissors either.
