Cut the Foil on an Oil Bottle With the Tab Built Into Its Own Cap

The Problem
Under the screw cap of a bottle of engine oil, coolant, or gear fluid there's a foil seal bonded to the neck. Pushing a thumb through it splits it unevenly, leaves a flap hanging into the pour path, and coats your thumb in whatever's inside. Cutting it with a utility knife means running a blade around a neck you're steadying with your other hand, and it drops slivers of foil into the fluid — which then go into the engine.
The Technique
The cap is the tool. Most oil and coolant bottles have a moulded tab on the cap for exactly this.
- Unscrew the cap and look it over — top face and underside both. There's a small tab or spur moulded in, separate from the threads.
- Snap the tab free of the cap.
- Run its point through the foil at the edge of the neck and sweep it round the inside of the rim.
- Lift the disc of foil out in one piece and check the rim is clear before you pour.
Pro tip: Once you know the tab is there you start seeing the same feature elsewhere — the pull ring on a gear-oil bottle, the reversible spout that doubles as a seal cutter on a jug of coolant. Packaging that ships with a foil seal usually ships with the thing that opens it. Look the closure over before you reach for a blade.
