The Problem
A fridge has to come out — for flooring work, a repair, or cleaning — and it weighs three hundred pounds on four small feet. Dragged straight out, those feet plow furrows through vinyl, scratch hardwood, and crack tile edges. The pros' answer for the worst cases is an air sled, but most homes don't have one waiting in a closet.
The Technique
Furniture sliders and a lifting tool do the job for a fraction of the cost:
- Empty the fridge or at least the door shelves — weight up high makes the next step tippy.
- Lift one front corner about a half inch. A lever-style lifting jack (the kind cabinet installers use) does this with one hand; the long end of a pry bar over a protective block works too.
- Slip a furniture slider under the foot, smooth side down against the floor.
- Repeat at each corner. Rear feet can usually be reached by lifting from the front once the fronts are riding on sliders.
- Roll the fridge out. The sliders spread the weight and glide, so the floor sees a smooth pad instead of a steel foot under load.
Reverse the process going back in, and pull the sliders out last.
Pro tip: Check whether your fridge has front leveling feet screwed down — backing them off a few turns raises the front enough to start a slider without any lifting tool at all.
Safety note: Keep fingers out from under the appliance whenever it's lifted — work the sliders in from the side, not from underneath. A fridge on sliders moves easily, which also means it keeps moving; control it from the sides on any slope or transition.
