Rebuild a Torn-Out Plastic Mounting Hole With Melted-In Mesh Screen
When a bumper or splash-shield mounting hole tears out, melt a piece of metal mesh screen into the plastic across the break, bury it under more melted plastic, and redrill — the mesh reinforces the cheap plastic better than glue ever will.

The Problem
The plastic mounting tabs and screw holes on bumper covers, splash shields, and undercarriage panels tear out constantly on older cars — the plastic gets brittle, one push-pin snags, and now there's a ragged hole where the fastener used to bite. Glue alone doesn't fix it: the repair carries load right where the plastic already proved it's weakest, and a glued patch pops back out the first time the panel flexes.
The Technique
Reinforce the plastic with metal before asking it to hold a fastener again.
- Cut a piece of metal mesh screen — window-screen material works — a bit larger than the torn-out area.
- Heat the mesh and press it into the plastic across the break so it melts in and sits embedded, bridging the damaged area onto sound plastic on all sides. A soldering iron is the usual heat source.
- Melt more plastic over the top to bury the mesh so it's fully encapsulated.
- Once it's cooled hard, redrill the mounting hole where it needs to be.
The screw or clip now bears on plastic with metal reinforcement running through it — the same idea as rebar in concrete, at trim-panel scale.
Pro tip: Bridge generously. The original hole tore out because the load concentrated at one thin spot, so make the mesh patch big enough that the new hole's load spreads across several inches of sound material.
Safety note: Melting plastic releases fumes you don't want to breathe — work outside or with strong ventilation, and wear a respirator rather than toughing it out. Mind the hot iron and the molten plastic; both hold heat longer than you'd expect.
