Two chalk boxes tied hook-to-hook let a two-person crew reel a freshly chalked line back and forth across a long layout without anyone walking the distance between snaps.

The Problem
Snapping layout lines across a long deck or floor system — say 13 joists per run, with workers 40-plus feet apart — means someone walks the full distance to carry the line back after every snap. On top of the wasted walking, a chalk line that gets snapped repeatedly without re-chalking goes faint, and faint lines make sloppy layout.
The Technique
- Zip-tie the hook ends of two chalk lines together.
- Put one worker with one chalk box at each end of the run.
- Snap your line. For the next mark, one worker unlocks their reel while the other reels in — the joined line travels across the span instead of anyone walking it.
- Each pass pulls the line through a chalk box, so it arrives at the far end freshly chalked. Every snap gets a full-strength line.
Pro tip: The re-chalking is half the value. A line that's gone dry is the usual reason long snaps come out faint at the far end — with two boxes feeding the same line, it never goes more than one pass without a recharge.
