Write the Breaker Number on the Back of Every Cover Plate

The Problem
Every electrical job at an outlet starts with the same ritual: which breaker is it? Even a well-labeled panel speaks in room names, not device locations, and "Bedroom 2 / hall" doesn't tell you whether this specific outlet is on that circuit. So you trace it — again — exactly the way you traced it the last time you worked on this same box.
The Technique
- The next time a cover plate is off — or right now, since it's one screw — write the breaker number on the back of the plate with a permanent marker.
- Reinstall the plate.
- From then on, the answer travels with the outlet: pull the plate, read the number, flip the breaker.
Do it opportunistically. Every plate you ever remove for painting, repairs, or replacements goes back on labeled, and within a few projects the whole house is self-documenting — invisibly, since the number lives on the hidden side.
Pro tip: This pairs with a circuit breaker finder: the finder answers the question fast the first time, and the marker makes sure you never have to ask it twice. Still confirm the circuit is dead with a voltage tester before touching wiring — a label is a memo, not a meter.
