Foil-Tape Strike Transfer
Taking an impression of a deadbolt in foil tape so the strike mortise is cut to where the bolt actually lands.
Mark the hinge with a knife instead of a pencil, nick each end so the chisel can't skate, stay 5mm off the edge until your depth cuts are done, then pare to the lines — and drill the screws with a self-centering bit so the heads sit flat.

A router with a hinge template makes quick work of hinge mortises — but there's one door to hang, the router's at the shop, or the mortise lands where a template won't sit. Cutting one by hand is a genuine carpenter's skill, and the difference between a crisp hinge gain and a chewed-up one is a few small moves at the start, before any real chopping happens.
