Sandpaper vs. Sanding Sponge
Why the two aren’t interchangeable in paint prep — paper shears surfaces flat, sponges only smooth what’s already there.
Furniture prep has grit numbers, not vibes: stop around 150 before painting, 180–200 before staining, then come back with 320 after primer and 400 between paint coats for a smooth final finish.
what grit sandpaper before painting furniture, paint won't stick to dresser, refinishing a dresser prep, scratch marks showing through stain, how much to sand before repainting
Sanding furniture for refinishing fails in both directions. Stopping too coarse leaves scratches the finish telegraphs; sanding too fine before painting leaves a surface too slick for good adhesion. And if a piece looks worse the more you sand it — blotchy, with a thin layer flaking through — you're probably cutting through veneer, not solid wood, and more sanding makes it worse.
