Back Sandpaper With Duct Tape to Sand Curves Without Tearing
Regular sandpaper tears and separates the moment you work it around a curve. A layer of duct tape on the back turns it into cheap cloth-backed paper — cut strips to size and sand contours without buying the reinforced stuff.

The Problem
Sanding a curve — a bowl rim, a rounded edge, a carved hollow — means pulling a strip of sandpaper around the shape shoeshine-style. Plain paper-backed sheets can't take that: they crease, crack along the crease, and tear apart mid-stroke. Cloth-backed abrasive made for contour work solves it, but it costs several times what ordinary sheets do.
The Technique
- Lay a regular sandpaper sheet grit-down and cover the paper back with duct tape.
- Cut the taped sheet into strips sized for the work — scissors handle it fine.
- Sand your curves. The tape backing carries the tension, so the strip flexes around contours without the paper separating or ripping.
That's it — the tape turns throwaway sheets into flexible, tear-resistant strips for pennies.
Pro tip: Make up several grits at once while the roll is out. A batch of taped strips in graduated grits covers a whole sanding session on curved work.
