Stop Cheap Masking Tape Pulling Paint Off by Sticking It to Your Shirt First

The Problem

Standard masking tape is made to stick, and fresh paint, new primer and drywall paper are all weaker than the bond it makes. Run it onto a wall you primed yesterday, pull it off, and it takes the primer with it — sometimes the paper facing too, which turns a paint job into a patching job.

The usual answer is delicate-surface tape, which is formulated for exactly this. It also costs roughly three times as much, which is a real consideration on a job with a lot of tape.

The Technique

Take the tack off before the tape reaches the wall.

1. Pull off the length you need.
2. Press it against your shirt and pull it away. Repeat a few times along its length.
3. The fabric transfers lint and fibres onto the adhesive, partially masking it. Less bare adhesive touching the wall means less grab.
4. Apply as normal. It still holds a paint line; it just lets go without lifting what's underneath.

For much less tack, his second method: drop the tape in a bucket of water. That takes far more of the stick out — useful on genuinely fragile surfaces, at the cost of tape that's harder to handle and won't hold as long.
