Make Grout Cleanup Easier by Wiping the Tile Damp First
Run a wet sponge across the tile face before you start grouting. The damp surface keeps grout from bonding to the tile, so the haze wipes off instead of needing to be scrubbed off.

The Problem
Grout dragged across a dry tile face grabs immediately — especially on porous or textured tile, where the tile pulls moisture out of the grout and the residue sets on the surface. What should be a wipe-down becomes an hour of scrubbing haze.
The Technique
- Before spreading any grout, run a wet sponge across the whole tile surface.
- Grout as normal.
- Clean up as normal — the film of moisture on the tile face kept the grout from keying into the surface, so residue releases with the sponge instead of fighting it.
Pro tip: Damp, not dripping. Wring the sponge so you're leaving a sheen on the tile face, not standing water — water pooled in the joints thins the grout and weakens it.
