Twist Thick Wire With a Cross-Drilled Stick as the Handle

The Problem

Twisting heavy-gauge wire by hand is a losing fight. Bare hands can't generate enough torque, and pliers concentrate all the force at two small jaw faces — they slip mid-twist, kink the wire out of shape, and chew through galvanized coating, which is where rust starts later. The wraps come out loose and uneven because you can't pull tension and twist at the same time with one grip.

The Technique

1. Take a solid wooden stick — a hardwood dowel or a straight offcut an inch or so thick works.
2. Drill a hole through it crosswise, sized so the wire feeds through without much slop.
3. Feed the working end of the wire through the hole.
4. Use the stick as a T-handle: pull to keep tension on the wire and rotate the stick to twist. Both forces run through the handle at once, so the wrap tightens as it forms instead of loosening between moves.

The wire bears against wood the whole time, so nothing slips and nothing scratches — and the leverage of the stick's full length does what your wrist couldn't.
