Snap Deck Screw Lines With Water Instead of Chalk

The Problem

Straight, evenly spaced screw rows are what separate a clean deck surface from a scattered one, and the way to get them is snapped layout lines. But a chalk line on finished decking is a trade-off: blue and red chalk stain, and even so-called dust-off chalk can leave a ghost across boards you'll be looking at for years.

The Technique

1. Take a brand-new chalk reel — one that's never had chalk in it. Even leftover residue in a used reel will tint the line.
2. Fill it with plain water.
3. Snap your screw lines across the deck boards as usual. The wet line reads clearly against dry wood.
4. Drive your screws down the line. By the time you're done, the line is already drying — and it disappears completely on its own.

No washing, no scrubbing, no stain across the finished surface.
