Avoid Drilling Into Wires and Pipes by Mapping the Wall's Danger Zones

The Problem
Drilling into a wall blind risks a cable or a water pipe, and a wire/pipe detector only half-solves it: when it stays silent, you're left wondering whether the wall is clear or the detector isn't working.
The Technique
Wiring and plumbing are installed in straight vertical and horizontal runs, and the runs start and end at the things you can see:
- Look at every switch, outlet, light fixture, and faucet on the wall. Each one has its supply arriving vertically from above or below, or horizontally from a neighboring device.
- Picture a vertical strip running the full height of the wall through each device, and horizontal strips connecting devices at the same height. Those are the danger zones.
- Drill outside the strips. A spot with no device above, below, or beside it at the same height is the low-risk territory.
A light switch with no outlet below it, for example, almost certainly has its cable dropping in from the ceiling — so the strip above that switch is the one place on the wall not to put a picture hook.
Safety note: This reduces risk; it doesn't eliminate it. Older houses can have runs that predate any convention — including diagonal ones — and renovations move things. Where you can't be sure, use the shallowest fixing that will do the job, check with a detector as a second opinion, and treat every cable as live.
