Technique: Vinyl Siding Nail Depth
Vinyl siding fails at the hammer, in both directions. When you drive the nails home like sheathing, the panel is locked solid — it can't move, so when summer heat expands it, the wall ripples with waves you can see down its length in raking sunlight. Nails left too proud have the opposite problem: a loose 12-footer flops and waves in the wind instead of the sun.
They call it hanging siding for a reason — the panel is supposed to hang on the nails and stay free to move:
Held to the wall, free to move: that's the whole spec.
