Pull the Fridge Out and Vacuum Its Condenser Before It Chokes

The Problem

The vent on the back of a fridge pulls room air through constantly to cool the compressor and condenser. Everything in that air — dust, lint, pet hair — packs into the coil and fan, and two things follow: the fridge works harder against a blocked coil, and the airflow blows what's collected back into the kitchen. Behind a fridge that's never been pulled out, the buildup is genuinely grim.

The Technique

  1. Unplug the fridge (or switch it off at the outlet) before touching anything.
  2. Pull it out from the wall as far as it will come.
  3. Vacuum the floor and wall space behind it, and wash the floor while you're there.
  4. Remove the vent cover at the back and vacuum the condenser coil, the fan area, and both intake sides. Get what you can reach — deep-packed dust may take a few passes.
  5. Put the cover back, push the fridge home, plug it in.

The consultant's cadence is monthly; even quarterly puts you far ahead of the typical fridge, which gets this done never. A clear coil also shows up on the power bill — a blocked condenser makes the compressor run long and hot.

Safety note: Power off before opening the vent — the fan and compressor can start without warning, and the compressor side runs hot.
