Deep Clean a Dishwasher by Pulling the Filter, Not Just Running a Cycle

The Problem

A dishwasher that's started to smell, leave grit on the glasses, or dry things with a film isn't usually broken — it's clogged. Food debris collects in the filter at the bottom of the tub, and mineral scale and pulp block the small jets in the spray arms so water stops reaching the top rack. Running a "cleaning cycle" with a tablet doesn't fix either, because the trapped debris never moves.

The Technique

1. Pull out the bottom rack so you can reach the floor of the tub.
2. Twist out the filter — most lift or unscrew with a quarter turn — and rinse it under hot running water. Use an old toothbrush on the mesh to clear the packed-in debris.
3. Check the spray arms. Lift or unclip them and hold them up to the light; clear any blocked holes with a toothpick or a piece of wire.
4. Wipe the door gasket and the lip around the tub opening. Grime and mildew collect in that seal and it's a common source of the smell.
5. Put the filter and arms back, set a bowl of white vinegar on the top rack, and run a hot cycle with the machine empty.
6. If odor lingers, sprinkle baking soda across the bottom and run a short hot cycle after the vinegar.
